Gary’s owner, comedian James Dezarnaulds, who also goes under the name Jimbo Bazoobi, contested the fine, and petitioned the Crown to cover his legal expenses. While the petition was denied, the £295 fine was also cancelled.

Magistrate Carolyn Barkell, argued that the accused had been eating garden plants, but there was no evidence it was deliberate, or that Dezarnaulds put him up to it. Gary’s lawyer Paul McGirr, told the court that police had issued the wrong infringement notice, as it related to a person, not a goat.

Speaking after the verdict Mr Bazoobi said: “Gary’s name has been cleared of all this slander. He was simply eating and I want to thank everyone for coming down here.

“Gary the goat taught the cops a valuable lesson today, don’t bite off more than you can chew.”
