Oxford Road in Johannesburg was closed on Tuesday after a hole formed due to continuing Gautrain work, Johannesburg Metro police said.

Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said the hole formed around 08:30 on Tuesday between North Road and Riviera Road.

The hole was approximately 2m in diameter and 1m deep.

A blue Nissan van, belonging to one of the Bombela workers, fell into the hole.

No one was inside the van at the time and no one was injured.

The van was towed out.

Motorists could use 8th Avenue, Main Road and Riviera Road as an alternative route.

It was unknown how long the hole would take to repair.

The previous hole took eight weeks to repair between 8 July until 1 September, said Minnaar.
