The controversial Respect candidate defeated Labour by over 10,000 votes in the Bradford West by-election yesterday.

Galloway likened his victory to the revolutions in the Arab world that have toppled dictatorships.

He said: “By the Grace of God we have won the most sensational victory in British political history.”

Galloway took 55 per cent of the votes – double what Labour received.

Respect leader Salma Yaqoob said the results demonstrated voters’ dissatisfaction with the Government’s austerity cuts.

Galloway gained huge support from the constituency’s Muslim community, who had left Labour in favour of his calls for immediate withdrawal of British troops from Afghanistan and a fightback against the job crisis.

The Tories fell into third place after the backlash over the budget and fuel chaos, while the Liberal Democrats took fourth.

The Labour press team Tweeted today: “Extraordinary result for Galloway.

“Disappointing we didn’t get enough support across BW but we’ll learn lessons & fight hard to win it back.”
