Fans expecting hunky Harry Styles of the X Factor group One Direction, weren’t afraid to show their disappointment when the 40-year-old chancellor turned up instead.

An embarrassed Osborne, who is the area’s MP, was jeered and hissed at in front of 3000 people.

Rumours that had spread on Twitter that Styles, the 17-year-old heart-throb, who lives in nearby Holmes Chapel, was going to appear, proved unfounded, so many fans then instantly headed in one direction — home.

Others shed tears of frustration.

One excited girl arrived with her face painted with: “I love Harry.”

A fan tweeted: “Loads of teen girls turned up. Imagine their disappointment when Osborne walked out!!!

“The screaming soon stopped when George appeared. Funny.

“He got booed by his own constituents!!!”

Another tweeter said: “Imagine expecting teen heart throb and getting the Prince of Darkness.”

Rumours of Styles’ appearance had been building since last Friday

One excited reveller, Alice McCann, had tweeted: “What’s all this about Harry Styles turning on the Knutsford lights?”

But Harry was rehearsing with his bandmates in London while Osborne was at the ceremony with Knutsford Mayor Queen Jessica Pottle. When the truth dawned, fan Sarah B tweeted: “Only in Knutsford, Cheshire, could they have George Osborne.”

Another, Rachel Rooney, said: “F****** George Osborne. Considering not going anymore.”

Some of Style’s fans are a nasty lot, as Xtra Factor host Caroline Flack, 32, knows.

She has been receiving hate mail since she started dating Harry.

She said: “It’s a form of bullying. I knew they were just a minority of One Direction fans and all very young. I can’t take it seriously.”
