Getting There

Unless you’re on a classic Aussie road trip, you’ll most likely be flying in to Darwin so get prepared for some pretty horrendous arrival times! With no restrictions on the time that flights can take off or land in the Territory, there are several ‘red eye specials’ which will have you disembarking into Darwin in the wee hours of the morning.

With the airport located about a 15 minute drive from the city, and an often long taxi line, the best option is to catch a shuttle bus into town. Enter your flight details into www.darwinairportshuttle.com.au to find exactly what time the bus will be departing. Alternatively, several hire car companies are stationed at the airport.

Getting Around

Darwin is a spread out city with many suburbs, but the good news for travellers is that it’s flat, making it an ideal place to explore from your hotel on foot or by bike. Chances are though that you’re going to visit the Top End’s stunning national parks on your holiday, making a hire car, preferably 4wheel drive, essential.
Several car hire companies operate out of the airport and Mitchell and Smith streets in the CBD.

Bikes and the ever popular scooters can also be hired from the city centre.
In fact, scooters have become such a trendy way to zip around the tropics they were recently the transport of choice for Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban whilst filming ‘Australia’ in Darwin!

Taxi fares are reasonable, but drivers can be pretty hard to flag down in the CBD over the weekend.
