The Aussie men smashed India 4-0 in their final to win a fifth gold in a row at the Games. For the Indians it at least wasn’t as bad as the 8-0 shellacking in Delhi in 2010.
The win came the day after the women’s team scraped past England, needing a last minute equaliser and a tense penalty shootout to beat the resurgent England side.
In another shock, the intense rivalry between Australia and New Zealand’s netball sides ended with a bit of a fizzle as the Diamonds demolished the Silver Ferns.
The Aussies’ convincing 58-40 win takes them ahead of the New Zealanders in number of Commonwealth titles, 3-2 since it was introduced to the Games in 1998.
After pushing both Australia and New Zealand during the tournament, England fell at the final hurdle to be beaten by Jamaica in the bronze playoff.
In other golden moments Shelley Watts became Australia’s first women’s gold medallist with victory over India’s Laishram Devi with unanimous points decision.
Andrew Moloney won another boxing gold as he defeated Pakistan’s Mohammad Waseem.
In diving Esther Qin backed up her 1m springboard bronze with gold in the 3m springboard.
In driving rain Alana Boyd also claimed gold for Australia in the pole vault.
Usain Bolt, the headline act of the Games didn’t disappoint in his only appearance as Jamaica won the 4x100m relay on the track in a games record.
