Pearson’s 12.67 second victory comes after a stoush with coach Eric Hollingsworth which led him to being sent home.

Meanwhile, Dani Samuels won gold in the discus with her first throw of 62.30 and bettered her own mark with a 64.88m fourth throw.

Another golden girl for Australia was 18-year-old high-jumper Elenaor Patterson on debut at a major champs with a lead of 1.94m enough for a win.

Three-metre synchronised silver medalist Matt Mitcham went one better with Domonic Bedggood for the 10m synchronised platform.

Despite an impressive day, the medal tally battle is over, with England on 48 gold and 140 medals overall to the Aussies’ 40 gold and total of 124.
