Google has chosen to celebrate what would have been Harry Houdini’s 137th birthday with a doodle.

The doodle depicts a poster of the famous escape artist and magician trying to break free from some chains in front of the L in the logo.

Houdini famously freed himself from handcuffs and straitjackets. He was once suspended upside down in a tank full of water from which he had to escape. He also caused an elephant to disappear at New York’s Hippodrome in 1918.

Houdini was almost killed by several of his stunts.

He eventually died at the age of 52 from peritonitis, a burst appendix. The condition was allegedly caused by a student punching his torso to test the theory that he felt no pain above the waist.
