The issue of “lethal autonomous robotics” and the UK’s stance on them bothered Wales MP Nia Griffith so much she raised her concerns at Westminster.
The Labor members for Llanelli is worried that such “killer robots” would go a step further than the commonly used drone aircraft, which are operated by remote control.
“A robot would be able to make the decision to kill a human being,” she worried.
Foreign Office minister Alistair Burt told the House of Commons yesterday that the UK Government “do not possess fully autonomous weapon systems and have no intention of developing them”.
“We have no plans at present to develop lethal autonomous robotics,” he said. “Such systems are not yet in existence and are not likely to be for many years, if at all.”
“Although a limited number of defensive systems can currently operate in automatic mode, there is always a person involved.”
