“If you want reds you have to kill greys,” Cornwall red Squirrel Project co-ordinator Natasha Collings has said to The Guardian.

The project has set its sights on re-introducing the smaller, native red squirrel into the UK over the course of the next five years.

The grey squirrel was imported from North America where its novelty status saw it popular with the well off, but the larger squirrel has had damaging effects since its arrival more than 150 years ago – it spreads a pox that kills reds and causes millions of pounds of damages to woodland areas too.

The work of the west county-based project could rectify these issues and imbalances though and restore the little seen British red squirrel.
