The 71 year old granny who is being hailed the “handbag hero” has explained why she went at a gang of jewel thieves with her handbag.
Ann Timson, who was caught on video camera making a bee-line for the six thieves as they broke the windows of a Northampton jeweller’s with sledgehammers before battering three of them with her handbag, explained that it was her “mother’s instinct” which inspired her to act.
“I saw a kid run up to the doorway of the jeweller,” Timson explained.
“Three lads followed him and when I saw their arms going, I thought the kid was being beaten up.
“My mother’s instinct kicked in and I ran across the road shouting at the lads to stop it.
“As I got closer I saw it was a robbery, and then I was even more angry,”
The brave grandma used her handbag to smack the helmeted thieves around, even hilariously causing one of them to fall of his scooter as he attempted to make his getaway.
However Timson denied she’s a hero saying simply “somebody had to do something.”
Four men have been arrested and police are now looking for a further two who are believed to have been involved in the incident.
