Schools are closed, airports’ flights schedules disrupted, and transport across the nation has been severely hampered as the biting cold hits in and the snow arrives.

An amber warning has been issued for Northern Ireland and the majority of England, with a Red Warning issued for parts of Wales.

More than ten flights have been affected at Southampton Airport due to closure of a runway, 400 schools in Hampshire have closed their doors for the day and a further 225 in Norfolk.

It is transport that has been hit the hardest, though, with South West Trains scrapping a load of services, and trains elsewhere across the country and in the capital subject to delays and cancellations.

Weather forecasters predict that the snow will continue to fall this morning and will gradually move east.
