The build up to the light switch on will start at 5.30pm with Southwark Cathedral’s St Nicholas Day Christingle Service, a traditional candle-lit carol service supported by Better Bankside and Borough Market to get everyone in the Christmas spirit. This year a collection will be made in aid of The Children’s Society, which helps vulnerable children and young people.

The Hemsleys – the best-selling authors of cookbook, The Art of Eating Well – will then join traders and customers as they gather around Borough Market’s 20ft Christmas tree in Middle Road where they’ll hit the switch in the spectacular setting, bathing the 1,000 year old market in light.

Jasmine and Melissa Hemsley said: We’re honoured to be asked to switch on the Christmas lights at Borough Market! As local south Londoners we’ve been visiting Borough Market for years and some of our favourite producers such as Wild Beef trade here. We’re also pleased to have Borough Market making a donation to our chosen charity, Food Cycle to help support those in need during the festive period.”

Borough market traders, Cartwright Brothers will be serving hot, mulled wine from 6pm whilet Konditor & Cook will provide mince pies, available to attendees on a first come, first served basis.

The market will be open every day from Thursday 10 December up until Christmas Eve, including Sundays. Community groups and local choirs will provide carols and entertainment in the Market Hall throughout December.
