A hotel made just of rubbish has opened in Madrid.
The five-bedroom Beach Garbage Hotel was built by German artist Ha Schult in the Spanish capital’s central Plaza de Callao as part of the city’s International Tourism Fair.
The hotel’s walls are constructed using detritus deposited by the tide in Europe, rubbish picked up at dumps and items bought from flea markets. Around 30 to 40 per cent of the objects found in the temporary hotel were picked up on beaches in the UK, France, Germany, Italy and Spain.
The artist hopes to highlight the massive amount of waste generated by mass tourism.
“I created the Beach Garbage Hotel because the oceans of our planet are the biggest garbage dump,” he told the AFP news agency.
