According to the experts, a clear night is top of the list of needs for spotting the bright green arcs.

And, as luck would have it, the Met Office reports that cloud and rain will clear from Britain tonight, leaving us with relatively clear skies for the rest of the week.

Scotland and northern England remain the best places for upping your chances of a sighting. But, wherever you are, the best plan of action is to go somewhere dark, away from street lights.

According to insiders, the best time to spot them is around midnight, between 10pm and 2am.

But most important of all, you’ll need a bit of luck, for there is no flawless formula for spotting them. It is, unfortunately, largely down to chance.

Good luck!
