About 30,000 homes and businesses were without electricity at the storm’s peak and Wellington Electricity estimate that 500 customers are still without power.
More than 150 extra staff have been called in to help with repairs although it is unlikely full service will be restored until next week.
A spokesman said “the damage done to the electricity network is far worse than originally expected. Many of the repairs needed are extensive and take a tremendous amount of technical work.”
