Hung Viet, Kingsland Road, Shoreditch – Restuarant review

The scene: This cosy Vietnamese eatery has been getting steadily busier during the last year. That’s because the food is yummy and the (usually sole) waiter, Hoang, is super-friendly. Its Shoreditch location makes this a good spot to line your stomach before you head out boozing.

The grub: A huge, slightly pot luck menu means that some dishes are better than others. Grilled scallop, BBQ tofu, salt and pepper squid and garlic morning glory are all winners. Also good are the DIY rolls – fill rice paper with a selection of fillings and roll ‘em yourself. All the food tastes fresh but the love that goes into it seems to vary.

Behind the bar: Wine and beer on sale but you can BYO.

Bill please: Starter and main course for a tenner.

Verdict: Good for a laidback feast. Order lots and you’ll get something that’s a gem.
