The 34-year-old accountant went missing on May 27, after leaving the turtle sanctuary that he was volunteering at. He said he would return at 2pm the same day, but did not return.

Local tour guides on Tioman Island have claimed that his throat was slit in a fight, and Malasian police are trying to work out what happened.

Speaking to The Telegraph, senior police offical Mohammad Zakaria Ahmad said: “These are rumours, but we are looking into them.”

Police have not confirmed these claims.

Mr Huntley’s family have issued a statement thanking everyone who tried to find Gareth.

His body has been flown to Kuantan for a post-mortem, but as it was badly decomposed, a second opinion has been sought from another pathologist. It is thought that an answer will be given next week.
