District police chief Johari Jahaya, who is leading the team, said that 39 people are presently looking for Huntley in the reduced area. He did not disclose information about the clues that lead to the narrowed focus.

Mr Huntley disappeared last Tuesday afternoon when he went trekking to see a waterfall in the dense jungles of the Malaysian island. Friends from the turtle sanctuary at which he was volunteering began the search for him when he failed to return from his trip at 2pm as planned.

Malaysian Defense Minister Hishammuddin Hussein assured the UK Defense Secretary Phillip Hammond that ‘all available search assets’ are being used to find the trekker. Meanwhile, Mr Huntley’s friends and family have made efforts to contact Apple and Yahoo! for geolocational data about the mobile devices he was carrying.

Gareth’s family and friends have set up a dedicated Facebook page here.
