Hoping to capitalise on dedicated Beliebers, internet trolls established fake Twitter accounts and sent tweets such as “@brittanyscrapma: You stop using drugs and we’ll stop cutting. You make this world meaningless and we’ve lost hope.”

The hash tag #CutForBieber was soon trending worldwide and photos emerged of people with cuts on their wrists.

It is unclear which photos (if any) are real but it is not the first time Beliebers have been targeted. Last year, a rumour about Justin Bieber supposedly having cancer prompted hundreds of fans to shave their heads in commemoration.

Justin Bieber said he is “trying to be better” after the incident, but if he wants fans to stay loyal, cutting back… on his bad behaviour wouldn’t hurt.
