Jawad Shammari lived in a 7ft long, 7ft high and 2ft wide hole after being sentenced to death by Saddam Hussein.

Jawad – who emerged from the hole in 2003, when Saddam Hussein was captured after going on the run – has just written a book about the experience.

The tiny hole contained only a rug, a radio, a few cooking pots and the Koran. Jawad’s mother brought food to her son’s hiding place to keep him alive.
