Bayley attacked the 29-year-old Irish journalist on a Melbourne street as she was on her way home from a night out in September last year.
Justice Geoffrey Nettle sentenced the 41-year-old to life for the murder, and 15 years for what he described as “a savage violent rape of the worst kind” reports ABC News.”Your rape and murder of the deceased has had profound, terrible effects on the lives of other people,” he added.
The court was told that Bayley, who has a long history of violent sexual attacks on women, had attempted suicide since his arrest.
Meagher’ father George made a brief statement outside the court on behalf of the family. He said “Justice has now been done. Jill lived a life full of family, friends and her beloved Tom.
“Jill was brutally raped and murdered and is never coming back. Because of Ben Leonard and the team at Victoria Police, and Richard Lewis and his colleagues at Public Prosecutions Victoria, justice has now been done. Police and prosecutors, we thank you”
