The unnamed woman drove from Hamitlon to Auckland and then to the east coast and to her former home in Mt Maunganui, a distance of almost 200 miles yet astonishingly managed to avoid having an accident.

The alarm was raised by one of the woman’s friends who had contacted the police after her friend had taken some sleeping pills and then driven off.

A search was carried by the police to try and track down the woman through any reports that might have come in about erratic driving and also through her mobile phone signal but she was not located. She was ultimately found slumped asleep at the wheel by her cousin.

“When woken she had absolutely no recollection of the events overnight and we have sought an urgent order forbidding her to drive and to seek medical advice on her suitability to remain holding her driver’s licence,” Senior Sergeant Dave Litton told the New Zealand Herald.
