The scene It ticks all the boxes for a Gothic-themed hell haven (in a fun Addams Family way) or a student pub, with its two-for-£8 cocktails and three-for-£7 shooters, but when we rock up someone didn’t tell the Goths or students (it’s full of suits).

The comfy leather-couched corner we get cosy in features a cabinet any apothecary would be proud to call his own, while the faux organ pipes, arches and a gargoyle at the entrance are fun touches.

But really, this is a pleasant – if dark, obviously – place to chill out, as the office workers downing Guinness at tables agree. Saturdays (open to 3am) and Halloween see this joint come into its own.

The grub An extensive menu of crowd-pleasers with nada to do with the pub’s decor.

Burgers from £7.95, classic pub grub mains such as steak and ale pie and sausages and mash (check out the two-for-£11 deals), plus salads and two-for-one desserts (choc brownie ice cream cake, anyone?) that are already cheap at £3.50 each.

Behind the bar ‘7 Deadly sins’ are the cocktails (two for £8) and strong from the Wrath we had (JD, Disaronno and Coke). 7 Deadly Virtues are the house shots.

Bill please Cocktails £5; shots £2.75; beers (Guinness and standard lagers) £4 a pint; red and white wine from £3.10/ £11.25 a glass/ bottle.

Verdict After-work boozer with a twist that won’t scare the wallet.
