The French Embassy estimates that there are between 300,000 and 400,000 French ex-patriots living in the UK, most of whom are in the capital.

Many of these are work in the creative industries, citing a less bureaucratic system here as an advantage over France, and seeing London as a route to globalisation. Many also bemoan the price of housing in London, though.

“If you want security and nice holidays you stay in France,” journalist Nadege Lezine told the BBC. “If you crave adventure and want to get new skills, you come here.”

Paris is France’s first city, with a population of 2.3 million, followed by Marseille (859,000), Lyon (488,000), Toulouse (447,000) and Nice (344,000) according to figures from Insee (National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies)
