Elsewhere the region which Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2016 declares the number one must-see in the coming year is Transylvania in Romania with West Iceland and Valle de Viñales in Cuba also making the top three.
Two destinations very close to home alsp make the grade this year. Dublin in Ireland and Manchester in England both made the list of top ten cities coming in at number 3 and number 8 respectively.
James Bond fans may also be inspired by Rome’s inclusion in Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2016. Rome, which was ranked as the tenth best city in the world, made the list thanks to the huge-scale restoration of the Colosseum, Trevi Fountain and four other key fountains, meaning the city’s major monuments haven’t looked so good for centuries. But Rome is also taking centre stage in the latest James Bond film, Spectre, which was released yesterday (26 October). The film is partly set in the city and features thrilling car chases along the river Tiber making Rome the perfect spot for those hoping to follow in 007’s footsteps in 2016.
