A lesbian queen? The horror. An artificially inseminated Royal? Scandalous. Fathers marrying sons? Well, to be fair that is horrific, but still somewhat unlikely, despite former Tory chairman Lord Tebbit’s prediction that this will happen if same-sex marriage is legalised.

Arguing that ministers had “fucked up” by allowing the legislation through with “little thought”, he claims that they had not considered the ramifications it could have, telling the Big Issue: “When we have a queen who is a lesbian and she marries another lady and then decides she would like to have a child and someone donates sperm and she gives birth to a child, is that child heir to the throne?”

He also says his dystopian vision of the future included fathers marrying sons to avoid paying inheritance tax: “It would lift my worries about inheritance tax because maybe I’d be allowed to marry my son. Why not? Why shouldn’t a mother marry her daughter? Why shouldn’t two elderly sisters living together marry each other?”

The bill, which would see gay couples offered the same access to civil partnerships as heterosexual couples, will receive its third reading in the Commons today.
