In an Instagram post that sent heads shaking and fingers wagging in disapproval last weekend, Madonna was blasted for uploading a picture of her 13-year-old son Rocco Ritchie holding up a bottle of expensive gin alongside two teenage friends with vodka bottles.
Captioning the New Year’s Eve celebrations, Madonna wrote, “The party has just begun! Bring it! 2014” for all of her 989,000 followers to see.
It all turned sour, however, when a vast number of her ‘fans’ begin to respond with scalding remarks about irresponsible parenting and the legal drinking age in the US being 21, commenting, “Booze is not something to make jokes about. Period!”.
Never one to sit and take it quietly, though, Madonna replied to the criticism on Sunday by insisting no teenagers actually drank any of the alcohol in the picture, “No one was drinking we were just having fun! Calm down and get a sense of humor! Don’t start the year off with judgment!”.
A large number of her Instagram followers also joined in the singer’s defence, some of them posting, “It ain’t bad motherhood, it ain’t good either”.
Good or bad, the fact of the matter was that Madonna and her four children spent the New Year’s holiday in Switzerland – where the drinking age is 16 – and not the United States, from which a large amount of the critical comments came from in the first place. Still, it did not help the situation that only three days prior to the Instagram scandal Rocco had posted pictures of himself and a friend holding glasses of champagne and shots, captioning the post, “faded”.
Currently, Madonna is said to be making plans to fund Rocco’s aspirations to become a rap star alongside best friend and gymnast Dom Sesto.
