Maison Martin Margiela ‘20’ – EXHIBITION
With a “deconstructivist” approach to clothing creation, the former design assistant to Jean Paul Gaultier showed his first collection under his own label in 1988.
Of particular interest is the Incognito range, including sunglasses that make wearer’s eyes appear as if they are blacked out, keeping them anonymous – in-line with Margiela’s decision to withdraw from the public eye and let his fashion do the talking.
His desire to rebel against celebrity culture in fashion in the ’80s is one of the reasons why he became such a cult figure.
