Citing Interfax, it said the Boeing plane was flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur when it went down near the Russian border. A source said a plane had been found burning on the ground.
Malaysia Airlines tweeted that it lost contact with Flight MH17 from Amsterdam. The last known position was over Ukraine.
A number of unconfirmed videos have appeared on YouTube claiming to show the smoke rising from the crashed Boeing 777 passenger jet, and several news agencies are running reports that it may have been shot down.
It isn’t known if any of the people on board have died.
