Also the first female elephant born at Melbourne Zoo, Mali tipped the scales at a healthy 900kg yesterday, compared to her slight 110kg at birth.

It shows promising development of the Asian elephant, who zookeepers say is smart and receptive to her training program.

She and her mother, Dokkoon, and the rest of the zoo’s elephant herd were treated to toys and a quick dip in the pool to celebrate.

She and her younger brother Ongard were nurtured as part of a breeding program aimed at protecting the endangered Asian elephant.
