A man died after being shot with a taser by Police in Bolton yesterday.

Officers received reports that 53-year-old Philip Hulmes had locked himself inside his home in the Over Hulton area and was stabbing himself.

They arrived at the house at 8.30pm where a spokesman for Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said he threatened officers, prompting them to use the taser.

A GMP statement said: “After it was deployed, it became apparent he had a serious self-inflicted stab wound to his abdomen.”

Hulmes was taken to hospital where he died around half an hour later.

A post-mortem is being carried out today.

The GMP’s Professional Standards Branch and the Independent Police Complaints Commission are both investigating.

This is the third arrest that has involved the use of a taser or pepper spray in a week.

Jacob Michael, 25, from Cheshire died after becoming unwell following his arrest where he was restrained with pepper spray.

And last week Dale Burns, a 27-year-old bodybuilder, died in Cumbria after police used a taser and pepper spray on him during an arrest.
