A regular at the Bushland Beach Tavern in northwest Townsville, he appeared to be choking on the chilli-pie and said, “No, I am fine,” before falling to the ground, according to Townsville Bulletin.
An employee at the pub said two nurses came rushing over and administered CPR before the man was taken to Townsville Hospital. He was pronounced dead 10:30.
“Everyone acted quickly,” the employee said.
“He comes down [to the pub] quite a lot, he is a regular. He lives within walking distance.”
The pub crowd, who had come to know their frequent drinking mate, was devastated by his death.
“He would normally come alone but he knew a lot of people,” the employee said.
