The man told police he’d had his wallet snatched from his hand onboard a train at Bermondsey underground station. In fact, the man had accidentally forgotten his wallet and left it a home. He reported it as stolen to police, but then made the mistake of bragging that he’d lied on his public Twitter account.
“This man wasted valuable police time by falsely claiming his property had been stolen. He then had the audacity to brag about it on social media,” said Matt Wratten of British Transport Police.
“Thanks to the quick actions of the staff in our force control room, and the man’s tweets, we were able to quickly identify that the theft hadn’t taken place.
“I hope this man and others who are considering making a false claim now think twice about doing so.”
The man was arrested and cautioned under the charge of perverting the course of justice.
