The football club announced plans for the resort at its Bernabeu stadium in central Madrid.

But the artificial island – which will come with luxury hotels, an amusement park, and a marina built in the shape of the Real Madrid badge – won’t be built in decadent desert state Dubai. The project is planned for Dubai’s rather emptier neighbouring emirate, Ras Al Khaimah.

The cost of building the resort is estimated at £631m.

The 430,000sqm project is slated to open by January 2015 and aims to attract one million visitors in its first year.

“It is a decisive and strategic step that will strengthen our institution in the Middle East and Asia,” Real Madrid president Florentino Perez said.

Lets hope it fares better than Dubai’s World islands project. The man-made islands, set in the shape of the world map, are currently a collection of desolate blobs thanks to the world financial crisis.
