The star of BBC’s The Voice had left the stage after a 45-minute performance when two men began arguing at the bar. One lunged at the other with a broken bottle, leaving his opponent on the floor in a pool of blood.

The party at Bankside Vaults nightclub in Southwark was attended by hundreds of competition winners as well as UK rappers Chipmunk and Tinchy Stryder and reality TV stars from The Only Way Is Essex and Made In Chelsea.

Around 450 people were held at the venue for up to 2 hours while police conducted an investigation.

A 25-year-old was arrested and is being held in custody at a south London police station. The other man remains in a serious condition in hospital.

21-year-old Karen Jessop witnesses the attack. “I was standing right next to them,” she said. “They began scuffling and everyone started moving back as you could tell things were about to kick off. But then he hit him with the bottle. It was awful. The blood sprayed all down my arm – it was covered.”

Rapper Wretch 32, who had performed earlier in the evening, said: “It’s horrible. Absolutely horrible. No-one can really believe this has happened. No-one really seems to know what’s going on. But I’ve seen the blood out there and it’s horrible.”

The event had been organised to promote Blackberry’s instant messaging service, which faced criticism last year after claims it was used by rioters in August.
