An 18-year old Utd fan dialled 999 last night and spoke to Nottinghamshire police when Nani was dismissed for a high tackle on Real Madrid’s Alvaro Arbeloa, believing the referee’s decision to have been erroneous to the point of being a crime.
“While this recent example may be amusing,” Control Room Chief Inspector Ted Antill said of the incident, “it illustrates the sort of insincere calls we have to deal with on a daily basis.”
“They waste our time and their direct us away from genuine victims of crime, particularly if we dispatch officers out to something turns out to be a bogus report.”
There were almost 7000 hoax calls to the Nottinghamshire police force last year alone.
