A tanker carrying more than 20 tonnes of the yeast extract collided with a caravan and crashed on Monday evening, spilling its contents across the motorway.
Police shut a section of the carriageway between junctions 32 and 33 – in both directions – however the road remained closed this morning as the spread was removed from the tarmac.
“We were called at 10.15pm yesterday to reports of a tanker overturning,” a police spokesperson said.
“Some of the contents were spilled on the northbound carriageway and we are in the process of emptying the remaining contents of the tanker and clearing up the spillage before it can be moved and the road reopened.”
The tanker driver was taken to hospital but their injuries are not understood to be serious. His personal attitudes towards the popular toast-spread remain unclear.
