Last week, a man in Australia woke up to a large cockroach that had burrowed into his ear while he was sleeping.
Darwin resident Hendrik Helmer tried at first to suck it out with a vacuum cleaner, but it only angered the insect, prompting it to crawl deeper inside.
Mr Helmer was rushed to hospital in terrible pain, where doctors managed to get the insect out with forceps after pouring oil into his ear canal.
However, Mr Helmer said he had to endure the unpleasant experience of feeling the insect in the throes of ‘death twitching’ as it was being removed.
He added that when the bug was pulled out, the doctor treating him said that they had never pulled such a large insect out of someone’s ear.
Although Mr Helmer won’t be doing anything different when he sleeps, many of his friends say they are now going to wear headphones at night.
