Parks and green spaces like London’s Meanwhile Gardens are one of the capital’s bonuses. With its surrel name – as though people loll about there while the world buzzes away elsewhere – Meanwhile Gardens is one of the best, stretching out along the south bank of Regent’s Canal.
It ranks among this correspondent’s favourite picnic locations – it’s rarely crowded and is slightly overgrown. It’s charming, and feels as if it’s just part of your backyard, albeit one with a sprawling skate ramp.
Before or after a picnic, take a stroll along the canal. The squat little houses, with dinghies at their back doors, will make you feel like you’ve stumbled into a village in the heart of north London.
There are also some outstanding pubs in the neighbourhood. Happy days.
