The 24-year-old from Portland, Oregon, was reported missing by his family after they had not heard from him while on a tramping trip south of Fox Glacier on New Zealand’s South Island, and a search party was sent in to look for him on Sunday.
He had told his family he was heading into the Copland Track, where there was bad weather – and they worried.
He was eventually found at a backpackers in Hokitika.
The police said it was a reminder for trampers to share travel plans with a trusted person as, although they felt he had probably left the area, they had to search anyway.
