Yesterday’s bomb blast in Moscow’s Domodedovo Airport – which killed at least 35 people and hospitalised a further 110 – was probably the work of two suicide bombers.
The bomb which devastated Moscow’s busiest airport is thought to have been detonated by a female suicide bomber accompanied by a male.
Reports on Russian television claim that the bomber was carrying a suitcase and shouted, “I’ll kill you all!” before detonating an explosive device.
The bomb sprayed metal objects including shrapnel, screws and ball bearings through the international arrivals hall at Domodedovo Airport.
Scenes immediately after the blast were horrific as passengers and those waiting to meet them in the arrival hall fled in terror. Piles of bodies and severed limbs were visible through the smoke as people scrambled to get out.
Many of the injured were taken away on baggage trolleys as there were not enough stretchers to go around.
According to a law enforcement source two terrorists are suspected to have carried out the bombing. Police are now trying to find their remains amongst the carnage.
“The blast occurred when a suspected female terrorist opened a bag. She was accompanied by a man whose head was ripped off by the explosion,” the source told RIA Novosti.
No group has claimed responsibility for the blast but Chechen militants, behind last year’s double suicide bombing on the Moscow subway that killed 40, are the chief suspects.
Eight foreign nationals have been killed in the attack, the preliminary list unveiled by the Emergency Situations Ministry said. The dead include two Britons.
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev condemned the attack and said there were obvious security lapses at the airport.
