Lady Gaga was queen of the MTV Europe Music Awards in Madrid last night, scooping up three prizes, despite being unable to attend in person. Gaga’s wins were losses for Rihanna, who had been nominated in the same categories, but the red-haired singer gave a show-stopping performance to make up for it.
Big winner Lady Gaga, who was performing at a concert date in Budapest, won the MTV awards for Best Song (Bad Romance), Best Pop and Best Female.
In a satellite link-up she told the awards audience and viewers: “”This means so much to me, Europe, I love you.
“I hate that I’m not there, but I’m working so hard.”
Rihanna lost all three of her gongs to Gaga but performed Only Girl (In The World) on a flower-covered stage and probably found the loss less galling for the fact that her single is currently number one in Europe.
Katy Perry, who like Lady Gaga had been nominated in five MTV Europe categories, won the Best Video award for California Gurls.
Justin Bieber nabbed both the Best Male award and Best Push Artist.
Kesha was named Best New Act, with Eminem named Best Hip Hop Act.
Thirty Seconds to Mars won the Best Rock award, Paramore won Best Alternative, Linkin Park were names Best Live Act and Tokio Hotel won the Best World Stage Performance award.
