A soldier has left a phone message for his pregnant girlfriend ‘Samantha’, asking her to marry him – but the message was mistakenly left on the wrong voicemail.

The 90 minute message starts off with: Hi baby it’s me, I’m sorry I couldn’t call you last month, but you know what it’s like out here.”

“Really, really sad one of the guys has been blown up.”

Then he continues: “Don’t ever forget I love you, I love you so much, I love you with all my heart and I was going to ask you, don’t answer, obviously you can’t answer, but will you marry me?”

In his message, the soldier also reveals that his girlfriend is pregnant.

“I can’t wait until you give birth to my baby, my little soldier. I will do everything in my heart and I will try my hardest to fight to protect you …

The mystery soldier ends the phone message with: “I’ve got to go back out here now. I love you with all my heart, don’t ever forget that, I love you, alright Samantha, I love you, bye, bye.”

When Diane Potts, a 44-year-old alternative therapist from Gateshead heard the message, she felt very emotional, and obviously wanted to let the couple know about the mix up.

“He’s probably quite oblivious that he left his message on a stranger’s phone,” she said.

“I just thought: “Bless him.” He sounded so young. I felt as though I should not be listening, because the message was obviously meant for someone else. His girlfriend must be having a baby and I really hope she gets in touch.”

The soldier spoke with a Sunderland accent, and is believed to be serving in Afghanistan.
