The temporary move comes after US homeland security experts reported terrorists could have worked out how to turn phones into explosive devices that can avoid detection.
This means that passengers boarding flights with devices that have no power could be forced to leave them behind or end up barred from flying.
Australian airports won’t be implementing the new measure but those travelling to the US or UK through Europe, Africa and the Middle East will be impacted as the new rules only apply to flights departing Europe, Africa and the Middle East travelling directly to the US and UK.
If you are planning on making such a journey you may be forced to switch on your mobile phones and other electronic devices to show security officials that they do not contain explosives.
