Having been battered in the preceding Test series, New Zealand were sent in to bat by South African captain Faf du Plessis and finished 8-279 from 50 overs – the key being Williamson’s outstanding 136-ball innings.
South Africa reached 1-165 from 30 overs and looked set for victory to level the three-match series, but collapsed big-time with a flop that included five run-outs – they were bowled out for 252.
Williamson saved the Black Caps’ innings after they stuttered to 2-32 off 13 overs, but an almost run a ball 127-run partnership between Grant Elliott and the man of the match set up the win.
