Mr Key has raised the prospect of a referendum to redesign the flag, and has said that he’d like to discuss it with senior ministers.
The Union flag has been part of the Australian and New Zealand flags for over 100 years; the New Zealand flag also depicts four stars on the Southern Cross on a blue background.
“My own personal view is that the silver fern is the right way to go,” Mr Key said, according to The Telegraph. “I think it’s part of the modern new look of New Zealand.”
However, any moves made to change the flag will be regarded by some as deeply insensitive, especially as 2014 is the one hundredth anniversary of WW1.
