A last minute equaliser from centre back Winston Reid secured New Zealand its first World Cup point against Slovakia in Rustenburg today.

After staring down the barrel of defeat after Slovakian Robert Vittek scored in the 50th minute, the plucky Kiwis never gave up, despite repeated raids by their quicker opponents.

The All Whites looked right out of puff until Reid latched onto a Shane Smeltz cross and headed home. He was booked for celebrating by taking his shirt off but surely didn’t care as he was mobbed by his jubilant team mates.

The draw ensures celebrations all across New Zealand today where such a result can almost be considered an upset.

All four teams in Group F are level on one point. Australia, on the hand, are bottom of their group after their 4-0 hiding at the hands of Germany on Sunday.

New Zealand 1 (W Reid 90+3) – Slovakia 1 (R Vittek 50)
