The National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research’s ship Tangaroa has been surveying Cook Strait’s sea floor which is where the majority of the recent seismological activity has originated from.

The specific area though has not been extensively mapped before though so it is difficult for seismologists to ascertain exactly where the quakes originated from.

Sunday’s quake came after an extensive period of activity in the region during which a number of earthquakes and tremors felt in New Zealand.
