A pair of rescue dogs have appeared live on Kiwi TV to show their skills behind the wheel in a bid by the SPCA to show how clever unwanted dogs can be and promote pet adoption.

The dogs drove a modified car, without a leash no less, using their own versions of pedals and resting their left paw on the wheel as if they’re out lapping on a Friday night.

Footage of the canines training has become an internet hit, and cross-breed cuties Monty and Porter were top of the class.

“It’s all the dog doing it,” trainer Mark Vette said.

“He’s started the key, put the paw on the brake to allow it to go into gear, put it into drive, paw on the steering wheel, accelerator on, and off he goes down the track.”

“No one’s in the car, no tricks, it’s all Monty driving – he loves it.”

The only problem now is man’s best friend will also be begging for the car keys.
